Antonio BrownWhat’s poppin’ League members?!?! Hopefully everyone is doing well personally and having fun managing their fantasy team in The League! For those of you who look forward to the weekly post, my apologies as my scheduled has been full to say the least as of late. Although I did manage to take a look at which teams are on their Bye Week and organize my roster accordingly. (I know, DAMN YOU! Lol) But wait a minute, did I say Bye Weeks? That’s right, if you haven’t already noticed, the NFL Bye Weeks start this week, so I hope your making your roster changes accordingly.

Note: I personally pay attention to all teams not managing their roster accordingly during the Bye Weeks, and I have NO PROBLEM removing a teams Owner/Coach for not managing their roster. (i.e… starting a player when they are on their bye.) Origins members seen this exact instance happen last season. There are exceptions though, I understand if your team has a significant amount of players on their bye week, you may just start a few so you don’t have to drop them from your roster altogether. If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to hit me up at enviousstaff@gmail.com or on my phone at (813) 516-1978.

In this weeks edition, we will recap last week’s games, release this weeks Top 10 E.L.S.I.E. Poll and updated Power Rankings, check out this weeks head-to-head match ups, a new League Poll to vote on, and probably the most important of them all the Keeper’s Deadline, which is rapidly sneaking up on us all. So as I like to say, “Let’s Get To It!!!”

***The Keeper’s Deadline***

For EVERY League member team, the Keeper’s Deadline has been reverted back to Oct. 16th! Now I know the deadline was originally Oct. 16th, then moved up to Oct. 11th, this is in all parts due to the NFL.com website being full of $#!t! The Keeper’s Deadline will ALWAYS fall after Week 6 of the NFL season. (Or before any Week 7 games are played). This year, Seattle takes on Arizona on Thursday, Oct. 17th to kick off the Week 7 games, which is why our deadline was originally set for Oct. 16th! However after our live draft, the NFL.com website pushed that date up automatically to Oct. 11th as being the furthest date I could set it for. There must have been a glitch in their website because now I can reset the date back to its original setting which was for Oct. 16th. Because of all this confusion, I will set up a Keeper’s Deadline Countdown ticker on the home page that should keep Oct. 16th in the back of every league members mind!

Now, I get this question all the time from other fantasy league owners or players for that matter. “Why do you have your league set their keeper’s for next season so early?” Because I feel that by doing it this way, it makes for a more realistic feel for managing your team. But let’s dive more into that very question. A friend from work, his keeper league can set their keeper’s one week before their draft. So realistically, who would’ve kept Percy Harvin-WR or even Von Miller-LB in that league? Who when healthy (or not on suspension), are by far one of the 1st players drafted at their respective positions. Not very realistic if you ask me. Seattle can’t just drop Harvin, or decide to not keep him without penalty just because he’s injured. He’s under contract, and injuries are part of the game. Same goes for Denver and Von Miller, their not going to drop Miller because he’s on a league suspension. They deal with it while he’s out and hope he’s ready to go when his suspension is over.

Two examples from The League! – Origins that stand out to me the most last season was Rich (Clam Diggers) & Michael (The Monstars) Keeper moves. Rich had to decide on keeping Tony Gonzalez-TE, primarily because it was rumored all last season that he would retire at seasons end. After long consideration, he decided on not keeping Gonzalez. Although Gonzalez didn’t retire as we all know now, I still think it was a sound move by Rich as he didn’t tie up a roster spot on Gonzalez for this season and if he really thought Gonzalez was a key piece of his championship season from a year ago, he could’ve redrafted him. Long story short, he decided to go younger at the position by drafting Jordan Cameron-TE with their 5th Round Pick in the draft last season which has worked out nicely so far this year! Nice job Rich!

Michael made an even more impressive decision if you ask me about his teams keeper’s from last season. Michael’s The Monstars team was pretty stacked offensively last season (if their 9-3 regular season record didn’t say that itself) and he had not one player worth keeping on the defensive side of the ball. But by league rules, even if he used his team’s Franchise Tag option, he would still be required to keep one defensive player. Then in Week 5 of last season, Brian Cushing-LB goes down with a torn ACL. Cushing was dropped from that said teams roster and Michael quickly scooped him up! At the time, I’m sure EVERYBODY was wondering the same question…, “Why???” As Michael told me, Cushing is a top LB in the NFL and he was going to ride his torn ACL all the way into this season. I can’t argue with that logic, lol. Especially when he felt he didn’t have a defensive player worth keeping already on his roster. Great job Michael! Now that’s General Manager type thinking there.

***Franchise Tags***

For Class of 2013 members, this is where we explain the Franchise Tag Options for your teams keeper’s. Here is the official definition by league rules below…

By league rules, you are able to establish up to four players as your teams keeper’s. Two offensive players, and two defensive players. The only other variation that is acceptable by league rules is three offensive players & one defensive player… Or one offensive player & three defensive players. You CANNOT keep four offensive players only, or four defensive players only. If you choose to keep a third offensive player, or a third defensive player, you WILL have to Franchise Tag one of the three offensive players, or one of the three defensive players. Franchise Tagging a player really does nothing to your teams roster in the second season. However, whoever you do choose to Franchise Tag, MUST BE RETURNED to the third season draft pool.

So by interpreting the rules above, we will look at my teams keeper’s from last season the St. Pete ConVICKS as an example. Last season my teams keeper’s were Matt Forte-RB, C.J. Spiller-RB, NaVorro Bowman-LB, and Matthew Stafford-QB. Because I kept three offensive players, I had to exercise my teams Franchise Tag option. So I decided to Franchise Tag Matthew Stafford-QB. Now keep in mind, with me Franchise Tagging Stafford for year two, I have to return him to be drafted upon for year three in our keeper’s league. Whoever you decide to Franchise Tag for the next upcoming season, you will have to return to the draft to be drafted upon for the following season after that. Just like in the real NFL, players would rather have the long term contract instead of being Franchise Tagged, which is why we return that said player to be drafted upon following a Franchise Tagged season.

So my keeper’s for season two of my keeper’s league have been set from last season. But following this season, I have to return Stafford to the draft to be drafted upon. My logic in thinking when Franchise Tagging Stafford was that in the draft, I could take the best player available with already having my QB1, RB1 & RB2 already being established from the prior season. So if a top RB fell to me in the 1st round, I’d take him. What if Peyton Manning-QB (who wasn’t kept in the Origins league) was there for me in the 1st round, I’d definitely take him. Basically, with your teams Franchise Tag option, you get to see what it feels like to make those real General Manager decisions! But of course, deciding on how you will use your teams Franchise Tag option, or to not use it at all by just keeping two offensive & two defensive players is completely up to you.

Note: You can decide not to use your teams Franchise Tag option if you only want to keep two offensive players and two defensive players. A Second Note: A Franchise Tagged player being return to the draft pool CAN be redrafted by the team he was Franchised Tagged by. A Third Note: In any instance, you can only carry over a total of four players to your next years team roster.

***League Poll***

Brought to me by my Co-Commissioner was the idea of adding a Flex Roster spot to the defensive side of the ball. We currently already feature that on the offensive side of the ball with our RB/WR roster spot. If voted in by League members, this will be the 1st of a few polls about this topic as we would have to figure how we would put that roster spot in effect albeit DL/LB, DL/DB, or the more common approach of LB/DB. But I’m getting ahead of myself, the idea will 1st have to be voted in by league members. Again, ALL LEAGUE MEMBERS are required to vote as this would affect Origins & The Class of 2013. Remember, 75% (or 18 of 24 Owner/Coaches) will have to vote it in for it to be added to The League! next season and I may close the poll early depending on if 75% is still reachable or not by early vote totals! But here’s your chance to voice your opinion in The League!

Note: I may have failed to mention earlier that you MUST REGISTER with this website, TheELSIE.com to be able to vote on League Polls. I would suggest using the same Username & Password from the NFL.com website for two reasons. One, therefore you only have to remember the one log in & password information, and two, because I can always retrieve your log in credentials for this website, where I can’t with the NFL.com website. I’ve had several Origin members who couldn’t remember what Username & Password they used to log into the NFL.com website last season. Think about it, after the season is over you probably won’t log into the NFL.com website again until the next season is about to kick off. That’s 5 or 6 months. You could very easily forget your log in credentials with the NFL.com website and I CAN NOT retrieve that information for you. On this website TheELSIE.com, I can.  🙂
